IREM Delegation visits Japan to strengthen scientific partnerships and public engagement

In June, a delegation from the Institute for Regenerative Medicine (IREM), together with Prof. Frank Rühli, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Zurich, traveled to Japan to participate in a series of scientific exchange events in the context of the Expo 2025 in Osaka.

The visit included the following highlights:

  • Visit to Nakanoshima Qross, Osaka
A part of the delegation toured Nakanoshima Qross – a major innovation hub for the industrialization of future medicine – where they met with leadership and key stakeholders to explore future collaboration opportunities. The meeting included representatives from the government and Swissnex, highlighting the importance of international cooperation in advancing medical innovation.
  • Visit to the CiRA, Kyoto
As part of the Kyoto University – University of Zurich Strategic Partnership, the group visited the Center for iPS Cell Research and Application (CiRA) in Kyoto. The program included institutional presentations, an update on the ongoing CiRA–IREM collaboration, a tour of CiRA’s facilities, and a seminar by Prof. Rühli on the biomedical analysis of ancient Egyptian and Japanese mummies.
  • Science Café at the Swiss Pavilion, Osaka
Over two days, the IREM delegation took part in the Science Café: “Creating a Healthier You with iPS Cells and Next-Gen Medicine” at the Swiss Pavilion of Expo 2025. The event brought together professors, early-career researchers, startup founders, and educators to present their work to a broad audience. This initiative was jointly organized by CiRA, IREM, the CiRA Foundation, and Wyss Zurich, with support from the Consulate of Switzerland, Swissnex in Japan, and the “Presence Switzerland” (Swiss Pavilion).
  • Innovating Next-Generation Medicine: Switzerland and Japan Unite
Swissnex in Japan hosted a dedicated networking event. Researchers, clinicians, and industry partners from both countries were invited to come together for an evening of exchange beyond the busy daytime agenda. It was a unique opportunity to spark new ideas, strengthen ties, and explore shared visions for advancing next-generation medicine.

Below there are some photos and personal impressions from the trip.
