Brain Iron Load and Brain Functionality at Old Age

Dr. med. Sonja Kagerer

The overarching aim of this project is to characterize patterns of non-heme, cerebral iron accumulation, and their possible interaction with genetic risk profiles for Alzheimer’s Disease and brain functionality at old age.

This study uses state-of-the-art ultra-high field MRI at 7 Tesla, which is conducted at the Institute for Biomedical Engineering (IBT) at ETH Zurich and University of Zurich (Prof. Dr. Klaas Pruessmann). Advanced computational anatomy models are applied in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Ender Konukoglu, IBT, ETH and UZH.

This study is a collaborative research-project conducted by University of Zurich, Institute for Regenerative Medicine (Principal-Investigator: Dr. Sonja Kagerer) and the University of Geneva, Prof. Dr. Paul G. Unschuld (Sponsor-Investigator, Main-Applicant Synapsis Foundation).

This project is supported by Synapsis Foundation, Alzheimer Research Switzerland, and Fondazione Hed Albireo.
