Here you will find more information concerning our procedures.
Clinical Assessment Procedure
The basic clinical assessment consists of a medical examination, a neuropsychological test sesssion, and diagnostic tests for the exclusion of other possible causes.
During the medical examination, we first ask you for your concerns and requests. We then compile a detailed medical history, followed by a physical examination and blood sampling. These assessments allow us to search for possible treatable causes of the memory problems, for example a dysfunction of the thyroid gland.
After the medical examination, various functions of your brain, including memory, will be assessed through a neuropsychological evaluation. The resulting profile of cognitive strenghts and weaknesses will be used to further clarify the diagnosis.
These two examinations are complemented with brain imaging, either MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) or CAT (Computer Assisted Tomography). Brain imaging allows us to find any infarctions or other brain structure alterations. The extent and localization of these changes further supports the diagnostic process. If necessary, we can add more investigations (Specialised Imaging- and CSF-Diagnostic Methods).
After completion of the examinations, we will discuss the results with you and explain all the evidence collected. Together we will consider therapeutic possibilities to improve your physical, psychological and social well-being.
If you are interested in participating in a study, we will first discuss all aspects of the study with you. For instance, we will discuss the purposes of the study, possible risks and benefits, the study timeline, required time commitments, and other relevant issues. You will also receive these informations in written form. After this, you will be able to decide whether you would like to participate (i.e., provide ‚informed consent’). As soon as the study begins, a study doctor will always be available to answer your questions or concerns, and the study will be conducted as agreed beforehand.
